“In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart.”
Anne Frank – The Diary of a Young Girl
“OH I DO LIKE TO BE BESIDE THE SEASIDE!”
Our annual trip to Llandudno was a joyful escape for 190 service users, who travelled in three coaches to enjoy a breezy, sunny day by the sea.
Families settled near the sandiest part of the beach, where children paddled and swam under the watchful eyes of parents, staff, and Asha volunteers. Others built sandcastles and shared delicious picnics — volunteers included!
A highlight this year? The tug-of-war contests! Children and adults joined in, culminating in a spirited match: men and boys vs. women and girls. With Keita’s timely arrival, the women’s team triumphed to cheers and laughter.
“It’s always a pleasure to join the trip. It’s something everyone looks forward to with keen anticipation.”
Cina, Volunteer
“This is my first time visiting the beach. I had a great day. Thank you Asha for making this trip.”

CARE WEST MIDLANDS: IMMIGRATION EXPERT SUPPORT FOR ASYLUM SEEKERS AT ASHA CENTRE

This vital project offers expert immigration advice and casework to destitute asylum seekers. Every Thursday morning, Berna Djinaj (Refugee Action’s Asylum Services Manager) joins Tamba to deliver sessions at Asha.
“Refugee Action’s strong relationship with Asha is a cornerstone of our success. We are grateful for the trust and shared vision that makes our partnership so effective and impactful.”
Berna Djinaj
We are deeply thankful to Berna for her enduring friendship and the enhanced support she enables us to offer in Stoke.
This year over 100 asylum seekers benefited from this.
WE WELCOME REFUGEES: STANDING UP FOR DIGNITY
When the Great Western Hotel in Hanley — home to asylum seekers — became a target of Far Right protest, NorScarf rallied supporters to show solidarity.
Gifts had been shared with residents at Christmas, and now voices rang out in support.
Supporters lined the opposite side of the road, exchanging waves with residents leaning from windows. Cars honked in solidarity.
By midday, the protest had quieted. As rain poured down at 12:30pm, it felt like nature’s cue for both sides to go home.
“We welcome refugees!” echoed through the streets.

FRIENDS OF HANLEY PARK: INCLUSION THROUGH NATURE
In July, Asha partnered with Friends of Hanley Park to host inclusive activities in the park.
These events foster confidence among our families to enjoy green spaces and offer local residents a chance to build friendships with asylum seekers.

FRIDAY DRUMMING SESSIONS RETURN!
Before Covid, our drumming group was gaining recognition. Now, it’s back — louder and prouder than ever!
The Rhythm of Unity sessions, funded by the One Stoke Fund, bring asylum seekers and local residents together through drumming and dance.
Delivered by the Tam Tam Drumming Club, sessions will take place in schools, care homes, and churches across the region.
Want to include a drumming session at your event?
